Window Vs. Portable AC

fix it yourself ac

Do you have that one room or bedroom in your home that just doesn’t seem to cool or heat? Or is your AC system just not able to keep up in the hot summer months? Perhaps you just want to add air conditioning to you patio, sun room, man cave, or workshop/garage?

I can show you two ways to remedy those issues without having to hire a contractor or spend thousands of dollars like your HVAC repair man has told you to.

Window AC Units

Window AC units often get a bad name because they run the electric bill up or they are ghetto or ugly. All that stuff is a thing of the past believe me. The new window units are far more efficient and have sleek and slim designs now and during operation are almost silent.

Don’t I need a professional to install it ?

No, Window units come with EZ install kits so you can install them in just about any window or opening.

My Recommendation

GE has stood the test of time by manufacturing high quality and long lasting products. Time and time again i find myself servicing GE window AC or central AC units that are 25+ years old and still running. Frigidaire is also a brand that has been around forever that makes high quality products.

  • 14,000 BTU, 11.8 CEER, 115 Volts
  • Electronic digital thermostat with remote
  • 3 cooling / 3 fan speeds
  • ENERGY STAR(R) qualified
  • EZ Mount window kit with slide-out chassis
  • Cools 300 sq ft

Portable AC Units

Portable AC units are great for this obvious reason, THEY’RE PORTABLE ! So when you have extra company coming to your home and don’t want to strain your air conditioner and cause a breakdown these are for you. The AC company I work for loans these units to customers if we cant get their AC running right away due to parts not being available or during a new installation so they have a bit of relief during that process. These units stand on the floor and will freeze you out of any room up to 650 sq ft. All you will need to do is plug in and run the attached vent out a window or door.

My Recommendations

Honeywell is a mainstay in the HVAC world in fact if you look at your thermostat it is probably a Honeywell thermostat. What i like about their portable AC units is the design. The design has a futuristic look goes great in modern homes. Honeywell also produces their unit in white if the black and silver model is too much for you . The two models i recommend are currently on sale 20% OFF

  • 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner with 13,000 BTU built-in heat pump
  • No bucket No drain design cools areas up to 650 sq. ft. and dehumidifies up to 79.2 pints per day
  • Digital LED display, precise feater-touch controls and full-function remote control
  • 3 speeds and automatic on/off timer from 1-24 hours
  • Powerful air flow and quiet operation (55 dbA)

AC Unit Power Rankings

Being in the field servicing commercial and residential AC units I know which brands are Reliable and which ones are Junk. Below I am going to list the top five brands from best to worst with pros and cons for each.

  1. Carrier/Bryant- Pros: Quiet, parts are the most readily available, easy  to service , great price point

Cons: Blower motors tend to go out under warranty period… not many cons for these machines

  2. Trane/American Standard- Pros: Tried and true, compressors never die, very efficient air conditioning and heating systems, some of the most sleek designs

Cons: Very high price point for equipment and replacement parts,

  3. Rheem/Ruud- Pros: All around good machines, smaller equipment to fit in tight attics or closets, good price point

Cons: Not as easy to service as others, not as quiet as the two listed above

  4. York- Pros: Very stylistic in design, compressor comes stock with sound blanket, very efficient units available

Cons: High price point, coils tend to rust out and leak during warranty period

  5. Goodman/Amana:  Pros: Lifetime compressor warranty,

Cons: class action lawsuit open for faulty evaporator coils, very loud condensing unit, air handlers are the largest out of all brands
